The Chronicles of the Black Gate has become one of my all-time favorite series to date. Phil Tucker writes a hell of a whalloping good story. I'm just hoping that it doesn't take Phil Tucker forever to release the next book. George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss have driven me beyond frustrated by keeping us waiting so long for the next books in their series. If Mr. Tucker can keep up the pace, he has earned himself a loyal reader in me.I thoroughly devoured The Siege of Abythos, which is the third book in The Chronicles of the Black Gate series, because I enjoyed it immensely. However, I gave it only 4 stars because it had two issues.
First, the editing was troublesome. There were quite a few missing words and mixed up sentences. Regrettably, the previous book in the series, The Black Shriving, had even worse editing problems, so I give props for the improvement in this book. The first book in the series, The Path of Flames, was actually the best edited/proofed of the three. By the way, I would love the opportunity to proof Mr. Tucker's manuscripts before they are released. His phenomenal writing deserves much better editing than he's getting.
The second issue I had was Mr.Tucker's numerous overlong descriptive passages. I don't mind a few, but these types of passages occurred so frequently that it slowed down the flow of the story. I'm sure there are many individuals that love this kind of descriptiveness, but, unfortunately, I'm not one of them.Please don't misunderstand me. As a whole, I truly enjoyed Mr. Tucker's writing, but I found myself skimming over some of the descriptions because they were distracting me from the parts that I really loved, and they weren't adding anything significant to the story.
In all three books, the action was creative, and the overall stories were quite exciting and inventive. The characters were well developed, and I've come to love many of them
as if they were personal friends of mine. Each chapter is told from a character's perspective, and I have come to look forward to reading the chapters from Audsley's, Kethe's, Tiron's, and Iskra's point of views. Quite a few of the supporting characters have stolen my heart, as well. It's difficult to determine whether someone should be considered a villain or a hero. Each character has their own unique vision and turmoil, so I can't pigeonhole many of them as good or bad. Many of them go through changes that affect their personas. Some of their stories are absolutely heartwrenching, and Phil Tucker does an exquisite job of getting you to care about them. The characterization and the plot twists are astounding. With each book, the story gets more impossible to put down.
Many other reviewers have described the story, so I feel that it's unnecessary for me to do it again. However, I do feel it's necessary for me to recommend this series very highly. I'm savoring it much more than I ever thought I would, and I didn't want any of the books to end. The next volume cannot come out soon enough. The longer it is, the better. Please don't keep me waiting, Mr. Tucker. Thank you for the amazing time I've spent enjoying your books.

Every chapter written from a different point of view, so i would be torn from one story snd plunged into another over and over again. Loved it! He has created a whole world with unique races and belief systems that all mesh snd collide into one compelling book, well 3 books if you count the first 2. Would recommend
This is one of the best series that I have read this year! Mr. Tucker paints a unique world with relatable characters and an interesting magic system. This series is filled with intrigue and action smartly set against the world's sociopolitical climate. Not to mention it is extremely well written and well edited. I am anxiously awaiting the fourth book in the Chronicles of the Black Gate. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes works by other contemporary fantasy writers such as Brent Weeks or Brandon Sanderson.
What can I say...finishing the fourth book in this series was almost depressing...I have not gotten so involved in a story and its characters since I first read "The Lord of the Rings" at age 14...and that was in the seventies. I have read.thousands of great books since then and can say that Phil Tucker is a talent to be reckoned with. His "good guys" (and girls) are perfectly imperfect...noble and beyond brave but very real and often fighting down self doubt and inner turmoil brought on by their goals and deeds. All four books from "The Black Gate" have impeccable, fast moving story lines and introduce incredible, but believable characters with deep spiritual and emotional ties to one another and their tumultuous circumstances. I am hooked and can't wait for Book 5. Way to go, Phil!
I've just finished the book and I have mixed feelings. Mostly positive - there' s a lot of character development, the plot is engaging but Phil Tucker could and should use some help from severe editor. There' s just too many slow passages that doesn't influence the plot in significant way but make the book boring in places. Still, the moment book 4 arrives, I'll buy it instantly. I'm especially interested in Audsley and Tiron fates.
My only real issues is I found myself wanting to skip some of the characters viewpoints. As with game of thrones some of the characters chapters are just much more interesting than others. On the other hand, Audsley, Kethe, and a few of the others have amazing chapters. Overall I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one
Each book in the series is somehow better than the previous one. The story is presented from six different points of view which on face value would seem to be very confusing but in this case Phil Tucker is able to succeed and actually at times offer the same situations from differing perspectives. The action scenes are superb, the characters well developed, the religions vary from reincarnation to creatures from mythology and if that's not enough throw in some demonic possession. As the book is over 700 pages long(although you wish it wouldn't end) it is a bargain at the price. I have come to know the characters very well and although I can't call them friends, I do care about what happens to them and await the final installment.
Great epic fantasy series. Easy to follow the plot line, plenty of twist and turns. The character development tends to bog down from time to time but it's nothing unbearable. The editing however is terrible. I kept getting distracted by the conflicts in the story, referring to someone as him, then her, then he again made me wonder who he was writing about. Also someone losing his sword then the next time he has his sword by his side. The number of people marching changing from 300 to 200 then back to 300. These types of errors had me scratching my head, perhaps he rushed this volume to market without a decent proof read. Overall a great story that I am looking forward to the next installment. My only hope is the editing be better.
