Melissa is a child of the Boston slums, who has never known the good life. She started work at 9 and married young to get away from Boston. Sadly her husband cares only for himself and after many disappointments abandons her in her hour of need - leaving her alone in labour in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico.
Cody and his cousin hear a scream and rush to see if they can help. Cody is shocked to find Melissa about to give birth, but he overcomes his embarrassment and hopes that his experience with cows will help.
A bond is created and not easily broken. Melissa is grateful to Cody and in awe if his kind nature, not to mind his good looks. Cody is drawn to Melissa, with a desire to protect her. There are few women in New Mexico so everything about Melissa is a discovery for him.
Unfortunately there is the issue that Melissa is actually married - albeit to a thoughtless, useless man who buys new cowboy boots with his limited funds rather than provide one cent for his wife and new child.
This is a light-hearted romance with a story that flows, helped along at times by a sprinkling of magic. Once of the key figures is the old Scotsman Mac, who seems to be able to read minds. I am generally not a 'fantasy' reader, but this is a subtle kind of magic, helping perfect normal events along. The focus remains on the relationship between Cody and Melissa.
You can feel the heat of the desert and see the sand that blows everywhere in the flat landscape without trees. The characters are likeable and even the inept villain is all too human.
This is a fairy tale for adults - a light, feel-good romance with humour and a good story.
This book can make you feel the passion of such a hot day. A hot day with a lot of love and misunderstanding but such a wonderful and hot story.
This is well worth the read. The author has a marvelous sense of humor and creates interesting characters in entertaining situations. Not deep literature, but good fun.
